If your lawn has suffered damage from voles and pocket gophers over the winter, there are steps you can take to help it recover and return to its former healthy state. Remeber the damage has already been done and now is the time to heal. We will discuss prevention in Here are some tips to help you get started:

  1. Clean up debris: Before you can start repairing the damage, you need to clean up any debris left behind by the voles and pocket gophers. Rake level the piles of dirt, and run a mower over the lawn
  2. Aerate the soil: Voles and pocket gophers can create tunnels that compact the soil, making it difficult for air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots. Aeration can help to break up the compacted soil and improve soil health.
  3. Reseed bare spots: Once you have cleaned up the debris and aerated the soil, you can reseed any bare spots in your lawn.
  4. Fertilize: A long, harsh winter can deplete the soil of nutrients that are essential for grass growth.
  5. Water regularly: Regular watering is crucial for the recovery of your lawn. The soil should be moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply and infrequently, rather than shallowly and frequently, to encourage deep root growth.
